Historical Ancient City of Dara Ruins at Nusaybin Mardin, Turkey. Dara, Anastasiapolis, was the most famous city of Mesopotamia, Mardin. The city was built by the Persian Ruler Dara Yuvanishin and ruled by Persians and Romans repeatedly, until the 1st centuries AD. Dara Ancient City is located in Oğuz Village, 30 kilometers southeast of Mardin. Dara, one of the most important settlements in Upper Mesopotamia in history, was founded as a military garrison city in 505 with the initiatives of Emperor Anastasius (491-518) to protect the eastern border of the Eastern Roman Empire against the Sassanids. The surroundings of the ancient city of Dara, which consists of structures carved into the rock and spread over a wide area, has been preserved with a wall of 4 kilometers. The inner castle is located on the upper flat of the 50-meter-high hill in the north of the city. Remains of churches, palaces, bazaars, dungeons, armory and water dam can still be seen in the city. There are also cave houses around the village, whose dates go back to the Late Roman Period.
