Belgorod Dniester fortress

Belgorod-Dniester fortress is a monument of history and urban planning of the XIII-XV centuries. The fortress is one of the best preserved on the territory of modern Ukraine. By its size, it surpasses all similar fortifications in the country. The total area of the fortress is 9 hectares. The fortress is located on the rocky bank of the Dniester estuary and looks like an irregular polygon. Previously, it consisted of four courtyards, each of which had a specific purpose and could independently conduct defense (currently only three fortress courtyards have survived). All the fortifications are surrounded by strong walls, the length of which reaches 2.5 km. Fortress towers and bastions were built into the curtains after 40-45 meters. Their initial number reached thirty-four, twelve of them were full battle towers, the rest were bastions and half-bastions, later buffered and turned into sites for installing artillery guns. Many towers of the fortress have their own names (Ovid’s (Maiden’s) Tower, Watchtower, Pushkin’s Tower, etc.), which have become a reflection of local traditions and legends.
