It forms the antigen recognition receptor (BCR) of the B cell with the immunoglobulin on the surface of the B cell. It is involved in signal transduction of B cell activation. Approximately 50% of plasmacytoma cases express CD79a. CD79a is often used in combination with CD20 to label B lymphocytes.
