A kidney infection, also known as pyelonephritis, is a urinary tract infection (UTI) that occurs when bacteria or viruses travel from the bladder into one or both kidneys. It’s more serious than cystitis, a common bladder infection that causes painful urination. If treated promptly, a kidney infection doesn’t cause serious harm, but if left untreated, it can get worse and cause permanent kidney damage.
