Sultan Melik, who was commissioned by the Seljuk Ruler Alparslan with the conquest of Anatolia, took the Erzincan, Divriği and Şarki Karahisar regions together with Kemah between 1071 and 1080. The reign of the Mengücek Principality, which was established in this region, lasted until 1228. Sultan Melik Tomb belongs to the period of Mengücek Principality. It was built on a rocky platform to the northwest of Kemah.
