Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that typically appear near the surface of the skin, most commonly in the legs. These veins can be blue, red, or flesh-colored and often have a bulging or cord-like appearance. Varicose veins occur when the valves within the veins weaken or fail to function properly, leading to blood pooling in the veins instead of flowing efficiently back to the heart.
