Wildlife – Birds. Ruff (Philomachus pugnax) inhabits freshwater marshes, moist meadows, shallow water shores. They breed in Europe and Asia, from England and Scandinavia to the Pacific. The martial bird feeds by shuffling the swamp shores with its beak. Insects, flies, crustaceans, spiders, mollusks, worms, frogs, small fish make up the food chain.
