The Broken Ring is a memorial part of the Green Belt of Glory, located on the western shore of Lake Ladoga. Opened October 29, 1966. It is located on the Vaganovsky descent, from where the convoys took a course to the eastern shore of the Petrokrepost bay of Lake Ladoga, and where they returned after covering a distance of 30 kilometers. Two reinforced concrete semi-arches (weight 32 tons, height 7 meters) symbolize the blockade ring, the gap between them – the Road of Life. On the platform under the arches in concrete there are traces of the tread of cars. Next to the memorial are two white reinforced concrete balls imitating searchlight installations and a genuine 85 mm anti-aircraft gun. The monument is dedicated to the hardest page in the history of the Great Patriotic War. In September 1941, after the city was surrounded by the enemy, the only way of communication with it was Lake Ladoga. It was within the reach of the besieging artillery and aviation, and the enemy’s joint naval fleet also operated on the lake. The capacity of this road did not meet the needs of a large city, which did not have the food supply needed for such a large population on the eve of the blockade. Soon famine began in Leningrad. Since the first winter of the blockade was very harsh, interruptions began not only with food, but also with heating and transport. The victims were in the hundreds of thousands. In January 1943, the blockade was broken, and it was finally lifted in the winter of 1944.
